Plot

March 2, 2004. A day nobody will ever forget.

Life was moving along as normal. It was a Saturday and most were off work. 4:13 is the time forever imprinted on every clock that stopped on the east coast. 4:13 is when modern day earth ceased to exist. All technology suddenly ceased to function, like a switch was hit. Engines, electricity, even combustion was suddenly rendered useless. Cars stopped moving, guns wouldn't fire, radio, lights, television, all gone. Everyone in the world felt the same pull on their bodies, as if gravity had increased tenfold, when the clocks stopped moving and modern day technology was rendered useless.

The people in the cities are the worst off. With no source of food other than stores, and millions of people to feed, things will quickly fall into chaos. With no guns the police won't be able to hold off the vast number of criminals who'll seize the blackout as an opportunity to better themselves. With no food, millions would starve. One billion will die within a year.

Disease will be as much a problem as starvation once medicine stockpiles begin to deplete. The people that didn't try to form communities, or tribes, will ultimately die, or become bandits and raiders. Barter will replace currency. Swords and bows will replace firearms. Chaos will assume the position peace once occupied. The ways of our ancestors will ultimately win over the ways of ourselves.

It is the dark ages all over again. Only this time around, it's noticeably darker.

Example/My profile:

Name: Nicodemus D. Albertson

Age: 29

Gender: Male

Pre-Change Career: European History professor at Brierley University

Description: To his students, everything about Nick's appearance was the same every day. When they arrived at class he always had the same blue jacket open, with an equally navy shirt underneath, on top of which rested a blood-red tie. To match his shirt and jacket, he also wore navy blue dress pants. He always wore the same rimless, square, glasses with a silver frame, which were always situated in front of his dark brown eyes. With his light brown hair at the same length, just below his ears, and combed neatly back. When he taught he also carried the same white coffee mug in his hand, always with Coca-Cola inside. This served to give him the overall appearance of an unprofessional man, put into professional clothing.

Nick stands 5'10”, and for a history professor he is in good shape, but nowhere near an athlete's level. Above his lip, on the left side of his face is a inch and a half long scar, an old wound from a middle school fight. Perhaps his most notable feature is his missing pinky and ring finger on his right hand. They had to be amputated after a snake bit him while he was visiting relatives in Texas. Another is a twitch he gets occasionally in his left leg, a second effect of the venom, which destroyed some nerves in it. Finally, on his left hand he wears an old signet ring. The few students that have gotten a good look at it say it has the engravings of a knocked bow, but instead of an arrow, there rests a large black bird.

Personality: Nick has a passion for his profession, even though he lacks one for the professionalism required by his position of professor. He takes his job seriously, but teaches lightly. Often adding in jokes, holding debates, or teaching for days without any note-taking needed. While inside of the university he's known as the “cool” teacher, outside he's pretty much a loner. He spends nearly all of his free time sitting in “Jashua's” his favorite, and Brierley's only café. He spends hours there reading and sipping Coca-Cola, he's in there so often he even has his own table reserved.

While Nick usually doesn't have much to do, he generally finishes what he does start. He a perfectionist when it comes to a task, the problem is he never has any tasks to do. Once a week, on Saturday, he practices archery for six hours, goes to Joshua's, and reads, usually going through a book a day. He has few people he calls friends, since most of them live far away, and though he gets along with his fellow professors, he tends to be the object of many “dying alone” jokes.

While Nick is good with people, the few that he talks to at least, there are a few he can barely stay in the same room with. This group usually contains heavy drinkers, people who's most notable trait is arrogance, and especially people that have no inkling of when to stop talking. In the latter case, he has even walked out of the room on them in mid-sentence. He is known to, especially during a debate, to interrupt someone mid-sentence with a counter-statement if he disagrees with them. For those who don't know him, this makes him appear to be an extremely rude person.

Bio: Nicodemus was born and raised, for the most part, in New York City. He spent the first twelve of his life there, which passed by, for the most part, uneventfully. Both of his parents were Protestant, but Nick never took religion too seriously. His father worked as a lawyer, and his mother was a typical housewife. His home life was quite peaceful. He had always been the quiet type in school, and had few friends. Those he did have broke contact with him when he moved with his parents to Clearfield, Pennsylvania, a silent place in comparison to New York City. From there, his life passed with little event. He was nearly a straight A student, had a liking of archery, history, and reading. He kept mostly to himself, and made few friends, even fewer than in New York.

This uneventful peace was broken when he went to visit his grandparents in Texas when he was sixteen. Nick had never actually met them, and was eager to get away from Clearfield for awhile. The plan was to visit for two weeks, and the first went well. His grandfather was a World War II veteran, and his grandmother had been involved in the Civil Right movement, back when few whites were involved. The beginning of the second week however held disaster. He had been showing off his talent for archery, and was retrieving his arrows from the target when the copperhead struck. Nick hadn't even seen it, and when he returned to his grandparents, they immediately started driving him to the hospital. By the time they reached it though, his pinky and ring finger had suffered a great deal of tissue damage, and had to be amputated. Meanwhile, part of the neurotoxin in the venom had damaged the nerves in his left leg as well. Nick hasn't been able to be around snakes since that day.

After that, life returned to it's usual repetitive self. Though, it took awhile for him to learn to do everything with his left hand. He was even the talk of the school for awhile, but all of that faded, and soon Nick was out of school, and enrolled in The University of Pennsylvania as a history major. Contrary to popular belief, he did party quite a bit in college, it was hard not to when you were staying there long enough to earn a Ph.D. When he graduated, Summa Cum Laude of his class, Nicodemus was given his signet ring as a graduation present from his father. It was a family heirloom, Said to be from old Scotland, back when they were still clans. Though, why they would have a signet ring was still a mystery to Nick. He had not found any record of such an item in any of his research.

After graduating Nick found a job at Brierley University, in Massachusetts. He wanted to get away from Clearfield, start his life somewhere fresh. He has been teaching there for two years now. It's not a large town, but it's large enough to have it's own university. Since he moved to Brierley Nick has lived in the same cheap run-down apartment, in order to save up money for a nice house.

Hobbies: Nick has a fondness for reading, and that takes up most of his day. He doesn't own any books, but the library at Brierley university is vast, and there's still several hundred he has not even touched. Another passion of his is archery. That is how he spends every Saturday afternoon and evening. It took him awhile to adjust to shooting with only two fingers, but soon enough he had the hang of it.
